Finding open ice used to mean checking a handful of rink websites, each with its own PDF, its own calendar and its own idea of what counts as a public skate. That just got a lot easier.
Thanks to St. Louis Skating Club member Greg Schomburg, IceTimeSTL reads all of these calendars twice a day and puts the ice times all in one list.
What’s included
IceTimeSTL lists every session a figure skater can actually skate on: public skate, freestyle and training sessions at eight area rinks. Themed skates such as Cosmic and Galactic Glow are included and marked.
What’s left out
The app leaves out ice that figure skaters can’t just show up and use. That means all hockey (stick and puck, drop-in, scrimmages and leagues) and all lessons, including Learn to Skate, camps and clinics.
How current it is
Every rink is checked twice a day, and a timestamp at the bottom of the schedule shows exactly when the last check happened. A few rinks’ schedules can’t be read automatically, so those are entered by hand.
Seasonal rinks
Some rinks are open only part of the year. The St. Louis County rinks usually skate from about October to February, and Steinberg Rink in Forest Park opens in mid-November. These rinks appear in IceTimeSTL only while they have sessions coming up, and they drop off when their season ends.
Unexpected county rink closures
Kennedy and Greensfelder (Queeny Park) announce unplanned closures on a status line, not on their posted schedules. A broken compressor or bad ice can close one of these rinks for days while its calendar still shows sessions. IceTimeSTL watches that line and flags changes in the app. The rink’s own notice is still the one that counts, so check the St. Louis County rink status line before driving out to either rink.
Always confirm with the rink
Sessions can be cancelled, moved or sold for private events on short notice. Use IceTimeSTL as a starting point, not a promise, and check with the rink before you go. Nobody wants to drive to a locked rink.
